Dr. Tom Fitz, Professor of Geoscience at Northland College, Ashland, Wisconsin will be the presenter at the Tuesday, July 25 meeting of the Lakeland Gem and Mineral Club. He will speak on “The Beautiful Diversity of Amphiboles”. Amphiboles are any of a complex group of hydrous silicate minerals, containing chiefly calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, and aluminum, and including hornblende, tremolite, asbestos, etc., occurring as important constituents of many rocks. Dr. Fitz has a PhD from the University of Delaware. He has fantastic energy and is a special educator. Geology and teaching are his passions.

Thanks to Carmel who has arranged another awesome field trip.  Here is info on the next outing:

Saturday, August 5th

Earthaven Museum, Gillett, WI

Carmel has information on a field trip scheduled for club members, and will need to know how many people would be interested.

There would a car pool to Gillett, WI. The day would include:

A tour of the Earthaven Museum, we could go collecting at an area quarry (yea!), and finish with a BBQ on the Museum grounds. There would be a minimal charge for the BBQ and do potluck side dishes.

There is no charge for the day, but a donation from the club to the museum would be appreciated.

The Duame quarry in Lena produces fossils from trilobites to crinoids to cephalopods. There are minerals there as well including pyrite, marcasite, dolomite, sphalerite (some large crystals have been found). So a variety occurs there.
